2024 Spring Trends
It’s Spring again and I’m so excited to get out of knits and warm coats and into lighter, breezier clothing. When researching this season’s trends, I laughed because much of what is “trending” is exactly what has always been trending for Spring…queue Devil Wears Prada quote: “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking”. And while I’m pleased to say I will not mention florals in this post, we continue with the status quo like pastels, trenches and dresses. That said, there are some NEW ways to style these classics which excite me and hopefully by mixing and matching some of these trends, we’ll see some fresh takes on classic spring outfits.
Blue is the New Red
Baby, pale and icy blue are the “it” colors of the season which makes sense for Spring since pastels are always the default. We talked all fall and winter about how Red was the “it” color and while Red isn’t necessarily “out”, this Spring, we’re opting for something softer and less bold. The good news is, baby blue looks great on most people so it should be easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. Try wearing the color on a simple day dress, Easter brunch dress or even a tank. Because of its pale nature, it will work well with denim, tans and whites. PRO TIP - I would stay away from pairing it with black which is very hard and intense for this delicate color. Opt for pairing with Grey which is another “it” color this season.
Make a Statement (Necklace)
I can’t believe I’m saying this but statement necklaces are back! If you watched any of the red carpet coverage of the Oscars, you would have noticed that big, blingy necklaces were the stars of the show. This is a huge departure from the delicate layered necklaces we’ve been used to the past few years. Everything old is new again, so just like the early 2000’s when big, colorful necklaces were all the rage, we’re going to see necklines that are fit for a bold statement. That said, the necklaces we’ll see will include fewer jewels and will be more sculptural. They will also wear higher on the neck so they fit more like a collar….we’re not quite ready for the drop necklaces…yet. If you’re nervous to wear the statement necklace day-to-day, try wearing one to your next event with a simple, lower-cut dress.
Cool Girl Sneaker
The Adidas Samba and Gazelle made the classic sneaker cool again and that trend isn’t going away anytime soon. If you’ve tried to get a Samba in the past 6 months, you’ll see they are always sold out but don’t fear! The great thing about trends is that once the market demands something, other companies will start imitating like crazy so you’ll knockoffs everywhere from Anthro to Dolce Vita. This more classic-style sneaker is much easier to style than the “dad sneaker” that was “in” a couple of years ago. For spring, we’re loving a bold color sneaker that will make any classic outfit more interesting. A sneaker is also a great way to combine two trends at once, for example, these Vince sneakers which come in light blue. Whichever color or style you choose, you can’t go wrong incorporating a “cool girl” sneaker into your wardrobe this season.
Trenches *Shocking*
Trench coats are another classic Spring staple that aren’t going anywhere. Trench coats are the perfect spring jacket because they provide a great level of weightiness for mild weather. They are also cut with a long hem which makes them ideal for elevating any look. That said, we’ll see some new takes on the trench this season. From color blocked fabrics, to unique detailing (like ruffles and embroidery) to the incorporation of denim - trenches this season will be anything but basic. We’ll love styling these unique trenches with simple outfits underneath and use them as the standout piece. And while these unique trenches are super on-trend….there is always a place for your classic camel trench.
Firstly, the thong sandal is back! For some of us millennials, the thong never went away but as trends shifted toward the slide style, thongs have seldom been sold by bring brands. This spring, you will start to see more thong styles hitting the streets again for better or for worse.
You’ll also see more textured sandals which will be great as summer approaches. From crochet slides to rattan puffy sandals, incorporating natural textures in your footwear will be all the rage.
Sheer Fabrics
We have seen mesh and crochet trend for the past couple of springs and while we aren’t losing those, we are shifting to more delicate sheer fabrics like organza and chiffon. You’ll see these delicate fabrics juxtaposed with a jean or more structured fabric to create a yin + tang effect. See similar styling of this look on Revolve. Additionally, this is a great opportunity to bring in color trends like this pale blue top or blush pink blouse. We’re moving into structured silhouettes while keep fabrics light and delicate - a look we saw time and again on the Red Carpet and during Fashion Weeks.
Honorable Mention: The Drop Waist
I include this as an honorable mention because this is a big shift that people will find hard to get on board with. We have become so accustomed to the cropped waistline that it’s hard for us to imagine the waist seam hitting so low on garments. You’ll start to notice brands like Farm Rio incorporating this unique waistline into their dresses and you’ll even notice subtle changes like tube tops, blouses and jackets hitting at the hips. And while this trend is fun and chic, it may not be for everybody - clothing that hits the natural waist (under the ribcage) tends to be more flattering. It draws more attention to the (often times) smallest part of you creating a more slimming look. When we wear a drop waist, we are drawing eyes to the hips which can often be the largest part of a woman. So if you’re super fashion forward and not afraid to try something new, take a risk and try a drop waist!
